What is JSPS?

In response to a number of suicides and suicide attempts within the Jewish community, The Jewish Suicide Prevention Strategy (JSPS) was launched by JewishCare in 2017.

This Strategy aims to raise awareness, educate and empower members of the community in addition to providing support to individuals and their families experiencing a mental health crisis.

A Steering Committee was established in partnership with members from Jewish specific emergency and community service organisations, schools, health professionals and Rabbis as well as specialist services such as the Black Dog Institute. This committee works together in order to provide a Whole Community Approach to mental health and suicide prevention.

The first and only Jewish specific suicide prevention strategy in Australia, the Jewish Suicide Prevention Strategy (JSPS), initiated and coordinated by JewishCare NSW, was developed in response to a number of people attempting and taking their own lives within the community.

A steering committee was formed, comprising representatives from 20 communal organisations, including local Jewish schools, Rabbis, Jewish crisis and emergency medical services, and Jewish Youth Groups and mainstream organisations.
